We Slept on a Floating Island at 3,800m (Lake Titicaca, Peru)

Can you really sleep on a floating island?

View from Our Accomodation

People live on tiny floating islands… on a lake at crazy high altitude in Peru.

And yes — you can actually stay on one.

We did it.

And it turned out to be one of the most unique — and surprisingly challenging — experiences of our trip.

📍 Where is Lake Titicaca?

Lake Titicaca sits on the border between Peru and Bolivia and is the highest navigable lake in the world.

At 3,812 meters above sea level, you’ll feel the altitude as soon as you arrive.

Most travelers base themselves in Puno, a small but lively town known as the folklore capital of Peru, where traditional dances and colorful festivals are part of everyday life.

🛶 What are the floating islands?

The famous floating islands of Lake Titicaca are home to the Uros people.

These islands are made entirely from totora reeds, a plant that grows in the lake.

Layer by layer, the reeds are stacked to create a floating surface strong enough to walk on — and even build houses.

But here’s the wild part:

👉 The islands are constantly rebuilding themselves.

The bottom layers slowly rot in the water, so fresh reeds need to be added regularly.

It’s a way of life that has existed for centuries.

🛏️ What it’s like to sleep on a floating island

Staying on a floating island feels unreal.

You’re surrounded by water in every direction.

The silence is intense.

And the views are incredible — especially at sunset, when the lake turns golden and the mountains reflect perfectly on the surface.

Some stays even offer outdoor hot baths overlooking the lake, which makes the experience even more memorable.

This is just the nature part. The hosts are traditional Uros people who lived their life on these islands. They tell their story with passion and lot of interesting (and sometimes funny) facts.

They are also extremely nice hosts. They are very friendly and want you to have a good time.

👥 The Uros people and their way of life

The floating islands are home to the Uros people, one of the oldest cultures in the region. Long before the Incas, they lived on Lake Titicaca and developed this unique way of life to stay independent and safe from conflicts on the mainland. Even today, many Uros families continue to live on these islands, maintaining traditions that have been passed down for generations.

Life here is closely connected to the lake. The totora reeds are not only used to build the islands, but also for houses, boats, and even food. While tourism now plays an important role in supporting the community, this is still a living culture — not just a demonstration for visitors. Staying overnight gives you a much better understanding of their daily life, their hospitality, and the balance they maintain between tradition and modern influences.

⚠️ The challenge: altitude

This is where things get real.

At nearly 4,000 meters, your body feels it.

  • Shortness of breath

  • Light sleep

  • Headaches

We definitely struggled during the night. Even if you’ve been in Cusco before, the altitude here can still hit differently.

👉 Tip: Spend a couple of days acclimatizing before staying on the lake.

🌍 Why this experience is so unique

We’ve traveled to many places around the world…

But this is easily one of the most unusual.

Not just because the islands float.

But because people still live here.

It’s a mix of:

  • ancient traditions

  • adaptation to nature

  • and a completely different way of life

It doesn’t feel like a tourist attraction.

It feels like stepping into another world.

🎟️ How to visit the floating islands

You can visit the islands in two ways:

1. Day trip from Puno

  • Short boat ride (30–60 min)

  • Visit a few islands

  • Learn about the culture

2. Overnight stay (recommended)

💡 Is it worth it?

Yes — 100%. We regret not staying longer than 1 night. The lake offers different larger islands and options to travel to Bolivia. It’s also just a unique place on Earth. Very cool!

But it’s not just a “nice experience”.

It’s:

  • unique

  • cultural

  • and slightly challenging

And that’s exactly what makes it memorable.
