Moorea is a lush, postcard-perfect island just a quick ferry ride from Tahiti. It’s ideal for nature lovers, beach bums, snorkelers, hikers, and adventurous travelers alike.

This guide helps you plan from arrival to adventures, including the best accomodation picks, top activities, how to get around, and useful tips drawn from real travel experience.

🚢 Easy to Get There

From Tahiti

If you travel by plane to Polynesia, you can’t avoid landing to Papeete on Tahiti island, as it’s the only decent international airport. The closest island that is even visible for the naked eye is Moorea. This means it’s easy to to get there:

Ferry: ~30–45 minutes from Papeete — scenic and inexpensive. https://www.terevau.pf/en/home/
Flight: Short hop if part of a multi-island plan. https://www.airtahiti.com
- For me this option only make sense if you have purchased the Multi Island Pass from Air Tahiti, so you are connecting from another island like Bora Bora. Otherwise it’s more expensive, less fun and less convenient.

Local Transport

Renting a car or scooter is highly recommended to explore widely.
Taxis are expensive, and public transport is limited.

🛏️ Where to Stay - Cool alternatives!

If you look for the typical resorts of Polynesia with overwater bungalows, Moorea is not short of those and you can book Hilton or Sofitel just to name the biggest ones. But we found the best alternative accommodations on this island, and if you look for something more authentic, adventurous and more affordable we have a few tips for you!

Smaller Airbnbs near Temae Beach or Opunohu Bay

Apartments in Cooks Bay
It’s a local residential area with less tourist, but beautiful landscapes. This means no hotels, local vibe and affordable apartments on Airbnb/Booking. The views from the garden were unreal, not to mention the extremely friendly host. She explained the life in Moorea and showed us secret locations. Having your own apartment is also a good option if you want to cook local fish for yourself and live more authentic. We stayed here.

2. Book a night on a sailing boat!

We always wanted to sleep on a sailing boat, and it’s hard to think of a better place than Polynesia to try it. It was so special to gaze stars at night on a slowly moving boat, while hearing the active marine life around you. The lights of the stars on the clean sky were sure special, but it did not beat the glowing biolumiscent particles! What else could make it more dreamy? The refreshing drinks in our hands…

Of course, the space is shared and rooms are not very big. But it’s an adventures. And it’s a good way to meet very interesting people.

Scuba diving

Scuba diving in Moorea is a MUST. The rich life of the Polynesian corals is hard to beat. Trigger fish, octopuses, eels., sharks, turtles. All on the list for a normal scuba diving in Moorea.

Hiking to Mount Routi

Moorea is famous for water activities, but hiking for the amazing views is well worth it too. It puts the beauty of the island into perspective, showing the perfect mix of blue and green colors.

Visiting the Tiki Village

The Tiki Village is fun to learn about the Polynesian culture. You can see dresses, try to play Ukulele and have a nice meal in the restaurant facing the ocean. Cool!

Snorkling at Sofitel

It’s one of the most fun snorkeling you can ever do. You can just slowly drift above rich corals and their inhabitants to Sofitel. Defo should be on your Moorea bucket list.

Visiting the banana and pineapple plantation

We love pineapples and bananas, so for us it was not a question if we visit the plantation. It was interesting to see how they cultivate these fruits. Not to mention the views!!!
